Explicit Dynamic Crash Analysis of a Car Body

Summary of the Project:
Title: Explicit Dynamic Crash Analysis of a Car Body Using Lightweight Materials in ANSYS

Overview:
The project explored lightweight materials like CFRP T700, Ti-6Al-4V, and Al 7075-T6 for automotive applications. A coupe car body was designed in CATIA V5, and crash simulations were conducted using ANSYS's Explicit Dynamics module (AUTODYN) to analyze crashworthiness across various impact scenarios, including frontal, side, rollover, and car-to-car crashes.

Key Outcomes:

  • Material Performance: CFRP T700 was identified as the most crashworthy material overall, offering high strength, low deformation, and resistance to stress.


  • Design Innovations: Conceptual design and preprocessing involved advanced FEM techniques and material-specific analysis.


  • Energy Absorption: Energy transformations during impacts were analyzed, ensuring constant total energy and optimizing material performance for safety.

                                                               Significance:

The project advances knowledge in automotive safety by optimizing lightweight materials for better crash performance while reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency.
